47 Miles East

This has been a great month for getting outside and having adventures. I've gone on a ton of hikes, camped up on Mt. Hood, and just got back from a road trip out to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I love the beauty that that part of the country contains. From the crystal clear streams, high deserts, hot springs, mountain peaks, dense forests, to all of the different kinds of wildlife. In the few days out there I shot nearly six rolls of film. I'm not sure if I'll do one mega post with all of the photos, or spread them out over time. I guess you'll just have to check back and find out.

Warm breezes

The warm weather seems to have come back to us recently. With that blessing of sunshine I've been able to get out with my camera a bit more and do some exploring. It's hard to beat Oregon in the summertime. I've got some hike planned for the next two months that should hopefully produce some pretty shots. These are mostly from trips to the Columbia River Gorge, and the last two are from a great spot up on the west side of Mt. Hood called Ramona Falls.

This is the season of the fire

After a mild winter, it's starting to warm up here in the city. It feels like spring, but I can't help to think that there will be a good storm/cold snap before the new season really kicks in. These shots are from the roll that I referenced in the last post. The last of my tri-x from winter. These shots will take you past Ecola Falls, the little waterfall at the viewpoint on top of Multnomah Falls, Mirror Lake, a foggy SE night, Council Crest, and  lunch in a snow cave near Trillium Lake. Color shots next time maybe, but none of this is planned.

Just got a new roll developed and was all ready to post shots from that roll until I was looking at my hard drive and realized that I never posted up anything from this roll that you see here. I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of shooting tri-x with a filter. Just in time too, since I just threw a color roll in my Pentax. Maybe this is why I can't have nice things? If you frequent this blog, or at least browsed through some of the older posts, you'll notice Eagle Creek again. If you haven't been and live in Oregon, or Southern Washington, I highly recommend it. Try to catch it on a weekday if you can, it can get pretty busy on weekends. Next time expect some pictures of snow. Whenever that will be.

In Living Color

I got a pleasant surprise yesterday when I got my most recent roll of film developed. Color! I could have sworn that both of my cameras had black and white film in them when I went down to the redwoods. As you can see, I was wrong. Starting with the kitties, the rest of the shots were all taken while I was wandering around the neighborhood trying to finish out the roll.

In other news, I just finished shooting my first roll of tri-x 400 film. It's my first time shooting with that kind of film, and with an ND filter on my lens. So hopefully those turn out well. If not, I've got five more rolls to figure out what I'm doing. I also recently found out that I can use hearing aid batteries to make the light meter work on my Canon FT, since the original mercury based batteries are no longer available. So that's pretty sweet.

Widow makers

To give an idea of scale on that first photo: that log embedded in the ground is about five and a half feet tall, and about eight inches in diameter. In bad storms tree tops can get broken off, and spike themselves into the ground, like mother nature playing a cruel game of lawn darts. And when you're walking through a grove with the tallest trees in the world, the tree tops can be big. These are from the first roll I've gotten developed from my trip to California. There should be a few more coming up once I get the film in my other camera developed. I think it's more black and white but, the roll in the other camera has been in there for a while, so who knows?
